Frequently Asked Questions

Is truly lossless PDF compression possible?

Yes, for the structural layer. Repacking object streams, subsetting fonts, deduplicating identical images and stripping metadata are all fully reversible-quality operations — the rendered page is pixel-identical. Genuine size collapse on image-heavy files, however, requires lossy image re-encoding, which is what our stronger presets do.

How much smaller will my file get in this mode?

It depends entirely on how the PDF was produced. Files exported from Word, InDesign or a scanner without optimization often shrink 20–50%. A file already optimized by Acrobat may barely change — in that case we detect it and return your original untouched rather than handing you a worse result.

Which mode should I pick for printing?

Use Less Compression. It keeps images at print-appropriate resolution and leaves vector content untouched. Avoid Extreme mode for anything destined for professional printing, since it downsamples images to screen resolution.

Does compression remove metadata from my PDF?

Yes, and this is usually desirable. Author names, the originating software, revision history, comment threads and XMP blocks are stripped. That reduces file size and removes information you may not want to share — a genuine privacy benefit when sending documents externally.

Can I undo the compression or recover the original?

Compression is one-way, but your original file is never modified — it stays exactly where it was on your device. The compressed version is written as a separate download, so you always retain the source and can simply try again with a gentler preset.

Why did my file barely get smaller?

Your PDF was probably already optimized — for instance exported by Acrobat with compression enabled, or generated as pure text with subset fonts. When we cannot beat the original we deliberately return your untouched file rather than a worse one.

Which browsers are supported?

Any modern browser with WebAssembly support: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Brave, Opera and Arc, on desktop and mobile. Chromium-based desktop browsers are typically the fastest for very large documents.

Is this PDF compressor really free?

Yes, with no file limits, no watermarks and no account. Because processing happens on your device rather than our servers, there is no per-file cost to recover and therefore no reason to meter your usage.

Does this work on a slow or metered connection?

Very well, because the file itself is never transmitted. Only the page and the compression engine are downloaded, once, and they are then cached. Uploading a 100 MB PDF to a server-based tool would consume 100 MB of your data allowance; here it consumes none.

Why is my compressed file only slightly smaller?

Because it was already efficient. Files that are mostly text, or that were exported by a tool which already downsampled its images, hold very little recoverable waste. Large savings come from oversized embedded images — where there are none, there is little to reclaim.
